Hello. Okay, I cannot find a quilting foot anywhere near me for my sewing machine and I was wondering if there are some tips that any of you could give me for marking this on my machine or the fabric? I am completely NEW to quilting and have just begun to read up on the subject and am finding the seam allowance to be a standard. Or if anyone knows where I might purchase a foot for my machine ( a Brother XL-5130) that would be fantastic also. Can't wait to hear from some of you!!

Re: 1/4" seam allowance question from a newbie!
Tue, March 21, 2006 - 6:01 PMI have a Viking machine and I use the regular sewing foot and move the needle to the right. On my machine its a 3.5 stitch width and touch the mirror image button to pop the needle over to the right.
Try placing your acrylic ruler on the bed of your machine, lower the needle slightly and start moving it over to the right. Check the measurement with the acrylic ruler. Make sure to write down the machine setting that comes out to a 1/4" seam.

Re: 1/4" seam allowance question from a newbie!
Wed, March 22, 2006 - 6:05 PMI have an old machine and found that I just couldn't trust what it said was 1/4 of an inch. So, I used an old tried but true method. Buy some graph paper (you can always use it up making templates), graph paper is usually set up with 1/4 inch squares, cut along one line, sew along the next line a ways, mark your machine along the cut edge of the paper with masking tape. I have my machine marked all the way to the edge. This gives me a long line to run my fabric along and I use it constantly. If this doesn't make sense I am sorry. -

Re: 1/4" seam allowance question from a newbie!
Thu, March 23, 2006 - 8:37 PMThanks you guys! I will try both of these methods and see what works for me. I am glad there is this type of thing out there where you can "talk" to people who have already tried something etc..etc.. Any and all suggestions are welcome and appreciated. I really must get over being shy about the sewing machine and jump in. It has been since high school (almost 20 years ago) that I have touched a sewing machine! Anyhow, glad to be in this tribe and look forward to "talking" to you all. Thanks. -

Re: 1/4" seam allowance question from a newbie!
Tue, July 24, 2007 - 11:53 PMTonight I was going crazy trying to figure out the 1/4" seam foot on my new Janome. The instruction manual went over all the other feet but not this one; then I opened the box the foot came in, and low and behold the instructions fell out. Oh joy! -

Fri, July 27, 2007 - 1:48 AMThey forgot to mention dropping the feed dog, in the instructions, when putting on the foot; it kept jumping out of place when I tried to put it on. Live and learn! I've got most of a lap quilt top ready and plan to finish it this weekend. I imagine the mistakes I've made are typical of beginners, but I laugh each time I make and subsequently figure one out. This is a totally fun hobby. : )

Re: 1/4" seam allowance question from a newbie!
Wed, August 29, 2007 - 9:25 AMYes, and it works well though it actually gives me a tad more than the 1/4 inch on the seam allowance when I use the foot. The walking foot was quite an experience as well. -
