I have so many extra blocks, sometimes 3 or 4 of the same kind, but maybe just one. They don't even close to match for colors, and they are all different sizes. Does anyone have any experience with putting these together to make a normal looking quilt? I have used some of them for my crazy quilts, but I have a stack of about 20 blocks, and I'm just not sure what to do with them.
I'd love to see pictures of projects people have made with mismatched blocks, or hear about them.
I also have a quilt front that I made when I was just learning to sew. I made so many mistakes. So many of the seams don't line up, the triangles have the points chopped off, and the blocks just looked "off" once they were sewed together. I'd appreciate suggestions on what to do with this too. I don't want to rip it all apart. Maybe I should just finish it and give it to my dog, but she'd just eat it anyway.
Thanks for your time!!

Re: What to do with extra blocks?
Sat, March 8, 2008 - 10:22 PMFinish it and give it to someone on the street. A homeless person would appreciate it much more than your dog.
As for the extra blocks... your guess is as good as mine.

Sun, March 9, 2008 - 12:22 AMTable mats are always good if you don't want to sash them together (isn't sashing a wonderful way to cheat?). Oh, and I've got a pincushion a friend made for me from a less than perfect block. I don't have a pattern but it must be out there. -

Re: What to do with extra blocks?
Tue, July 15, 2008 - 9:54 AMUsing old or excess blocks can add interest to the back of any quilt. Try putting a few randomly place and fill in the extra space with large pieces of fabric to create your back.
What about using them for corner blocks on the front or back of a quilt.
If you want to create a scrappy quilt use them all and find a complimentary color for the background fabric. To make block fit you just have to add borders or sashing around them to make them all the same size.
Try placing them in a random order (diagonally) and add fabric around them to fill in space. This can make a unique abstract looking quilt.
What about making pot holders out of each block. You could start a nice stash for quick gifts that way.
Use them on tote bags. Oh the ideas keep coming! LOL
Have fun, and happy sewing,
Chris
