quilting magazines

topic posted Thu, February 22, 2007 - 10:44 PM by  Amy
I haven't subscribed to a quilting magazine for years. It just seemed that I had so many projects in my head that one more awesome photo would put me over the edge.
Today I dropped by the grocery to check out the magazines, thinking I might subscribe to one again. Holy cow, there must be a dozen of them to choose from.
I don't know where to begin. Some seem to have lots of projects while others have great pictures, not that my quilts will ever look that good.
Do you all have a favorites to recommend?

I like McCall's Quilting, Quick Quilts, and Quilter's World. There are so many others, though. It really depends on your preferences in quilting. Fons and Porter is also good with lots of tips and articles as well as wuilt patterns. If you tell me your likes, I could give you a better list. I subscribe to quite a few since I can't choose, myself. I hope this helps. Have a good day!

The only one I'm subscribing to curently is Quilter's Newsletter. I like some of the others too, but for now...
My ideal quilt mag would have a little bit less advertising, more pictures, fewer specific projects (I don't really want to do someone elses quilt) more techniques with ideas and encouragement for experimentation on one's own... Also a nice big reader's gallery, stuff made by non-famous quilters.

Your mag sounds great! Add a 'readers favourite blocks' section and it would be perfect!!!! When are you publishing???? Ha Ha. : )

Speaking of online, I highly recommend www.quiltersbuzz.com as a good site to browse for fabrics, tips, and so on. As far as magazines are concerned, I also like Quilters Newsletter.

It's difficult to choose from the variety of quilting magazines but some of them are not very good and appear to just be 99% advertisements with perhaps a quilting pattern thrown in. I don't even really buy magazines too much any more because I'd rather spend what little money I have on fabrics and thread!

Traditional Quiltworks and McCall's are past faves, although I currently subscribe to neither. My absolute favorite magazine is a Japanese one called Patchwork Quilt Tsushin. It has the most beautiful photos I've ever seen in a quilt mag. Sadly, since my mom's passing I have no one to translate the text, but I can still figure things out from the diagrams.

If you're looking for a magazine for quilts, the ones already suggested are good.

If you're looking for a magazine for quilters (and there is a difference), check out Qulter's Home. (I'm pretty sure that's what it's called.) There are projects and quilts in it. But it's not about what new project you should do or what new fabric you should buy. It's for a quilter to read when he/she isn't quilting. All of those funny little things that make quilters different from the rest of the population, and the rest of the sewing population. It's a magazine that's actually written for quilters to read, not just for us to shelve until we're ready for a new project.
