I have so many extra blocks, sometimes 3 or 4 of the same kind, but maybe just one. They don't even close to match for colors, and they are all different sizes. Does anyone have any experience with putting these together to make a normal looking quilt? I have used some of them for my crazy quilts, but I have a stack of about 20 blocks, and I'm just not sure what to do with them.
I'd love to see pictures of projects people have made with mismatched blocks, or hear about them.

I also have a quilt front that I made when I was just learning to sew. I made so many mistakes. So many of the seams don't line up, the triangles have the points chopped off, and the blocks just looked "off" once they were sewed together. I'd appreciate suggestions on what to do with this too. I don't want to rip it all apart. Maybe I should just finish it and give it to my dog, but she'd just eat it anyway.
Thanks for your time!!

So far, I've made One for my nephew at his birth. One for a good friend at work. One for a charity raffle. One for my cousin for her toddler. One for my niece at her birth. One for my supervisor at work. Currently making one for friends of mine who are due soon.

The question is, really, the big-wig at the company I work for is expecting. It's a small company, so we see each other every day. He knows my name. So it's not like making one for a complete stranger… but it's also not really making one for brownie points. His position has almost completely nothing to do with the job I have. He can't really help or hurt me.

Others would view it as brown-nosing. Do I care what others think? Except for the fact that a whole lot of other people that I know just as well as the company president have had babies and not gotten quilts… I don't know that matters. And the people I'm a lot closer to haven't been having babies yet.

As a company president, would it be seen as a nice gesture to get a baby quilt from someone you see but rarely have contact with? Or would it be more of "what does SHE want?"

Also, I'm already working on my third baby quilt for the year. That would make a fourth in 2008. Should 2008 really be The Year of the Baby Quilt?

Weigh in, give me your comments. I know some people out there are probably already thinking, "you can't have enough blankets…"

The problem is, if you just browse tribe and search for Quilting, it doesn't give you this tribe first. ???!!!
So then you have to go to hobbies & crafts and sort through about 40 screens of crap before you're even in the Q section, and by that time you really have to get back to work before you get in trouble.

I had almost given up. Then I was looking at tribes my friends are in. Ta-Da! Quilting. Named "Quilting" even.

Anyway, new to this tribe. New to Tribe in general. Been quilting for ages. (Ages… I'm 33 and have only been quilting for probably 15 of those.) I'm at the point of quilting where it's just natural to make a baby quilt for new babies, but I'm tired of hearing people gush about how great they look. Yeah, it's a quilt. The kid will lay on it, play on it, eat on it, chew on it, sleep on it, not to mention all the unmentionable things that will happen on it. Does it matter that it looks good? (Yeah, of course it does. Those corners still need to be square.)

My mom says I got her into quilting. But actually she already had all the books. I just opened them up one day when I was bored…

I’d going to quilt it by hand so I’m unsure how long that will take me. There were so many “tricks” to the sewing process that I ended up learning by trial and error, but the top looks fantastic. On the whole it is pretty darn square with most corners butting up nicely. I’ve a pale yellow floral print for a back and am using a low loft batting to make the quilting easier. I imagine I won’t start for a couple of months as I’ve yet to acquire a sewing machine, and in a few weeks I’m taking a visit to Oklahoma where mom has promised me a crash course. My aunt who lives a couple of miles from the folks has finished over 800 with the church group she quilts with. I’ll be sure to take along the camera and snap a lot of pictures to post. In the meantime, I’m urging leslee (a work buddy) to join in this tribe if she can find the time. There will be lots of puckering and it will look totally wrong, but carefully ease the pieces together. When you press it open, the pieces wil naturally go where they are supposed to go. Steam or spray water on the stubborn spots then iron. I hope this helps.

I've always love fabrics etc and have often dreamed of quilting but never got round to it. I have a litle holiday right now and I want to get started with a small project.
Having thought about those things for YEARS. I already know what I want to do.,......you see the danger here right away, right?
I am just back from nearly a year in the Sahara and I want to do a simple and very small piece to put at the front of a small bag (purse style) that would look a bit like the dunes.
I have the books from the library, I am not entirely useless with a needle BUT I don't know how to do a slightly curved joining of quilt piece and still get a flat surface.
A couple of month ago the Smithsonian Magazine had a article on some quilts from Alabama and I love the way they are "free" this is pretty much the style of what I want to do (but in smaller) can anybody try to explain to me how to proceed for a very "natural" and "spontaneous" quilt.

Thanks.

I've put one of the quilts from the Smithonian article as my avatar

So I got into quilting a few years back and completely jumped ahead of myself by doing a king sized bed quilt..had a blast love doing it would love to do more BUT
I realized I do not have time to hand quilt nor the appropriate machine to machine quilt. As I have been an avid sewer for many years I'm not really sure I want to pay someone to do this for me.
SO the questions are this:
Who uses home machines to quilt and if so which ones? I want one that is a good all around machine too as my faithful Kenmore finaly died and I need a new general machine as well.
I've been contemplating a Bernina but I'm not sure if I can do a King size quilt with it. The Pfaff can but it only does straight stiches...
Any advice?
Oh and how much am I looking to spend? Since all the sights have this ridiculous aversion to letting us know how much they cost..as they think we'd be less annoyed by going to the store to find the machine is several grand and not affordable than to see it online. Harumpf!

I'm from New Orleans and due to the storm I lost all the patterns (and a couple of the quilts) I had collected over the years (I think losing the patterns hurt more than the quilts....) But, a year has come and gone and I am ready (no, really aching) to get back to work.

I had a pattern for the Double Wedding Ring Quilt that was in a small book by Mary Ellen Hopkins. I have been searching the net, but it appears it is out of print - and I am not having any luck finding a used copy.

Does anyone out there have the book and would be willing to copy it for me (pattern and all) ? I would be more than happy to pay copy and mailing charges. It really was the best technique and pattern for the Double Wedding Ring that I ever came across.

Anyway, I'm glad I found this group - you guys are inspiring! Lynn

I am the only one doing the actual quilting part right now, but I have recently attained a quilting machine and sewing machine to go with it, so we should soon be able to make more quilts more quickly.

Hi Everyone,

I'm new to Tribe and I've spent a great day looking through some of the various tribes that correspond to my varied interests. I was glad to find at least one Quilting Tribe that had some more men in it. It gets a little tiresome explaining to people that yes, I am a man who quilts. Finding a group that is established already with some men in it makes it much easier and comfortable.

I have been quilting since the 80s. I had worked doing theatrical costuming prior to that and making my own clothes as well. My mother, out of frustration taught me to use a sewing machine at age six, so I would stop making 'adjustments' to the settings. LOL Good excuse eh? I became a quilter after a friend asked me to put the blocks together for a quilt she wanted to embellish in tribute to a friend of hers who had died. Since then, I haven't been able to stop. I make quilts for myself primarily and for friends I love and cherish, as Christmas presents. I work in many styles, traditional, machine applique, tying and machine quilting.

I'm hoping joining will keep me motivated to finish the many quilts I have hanging about that are unfinished. That, and I have too many new designs and projects filling my head. I also , as I'm sure most of you do too, have WAY TOO MUCH fabric for the space I live in at present. I really must get cracking on getting more made.

Cheers, Drake

QUILTERS COMFORT AMERICA
A Cooperative Project
To Comfort Victims of Hurricane Katrina

To quilters everywhere: The devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina on the Gulf Coast is beyond belief. Here in Houston our hearts are heavy with sorrow for all the horrible losses, and we are preparing to welcome the thousands of refugees that are being bussed to us because they have lost their homes or have no access to whatever is left of their homes. Like so many other people, we want to help. Knowing quilters, we think you want to help, too, because there are no more generous, giving, open-hearted people than quilters.

Therefore, we are launching a two-part drive for Hurricane Katrina relief, and we urge you to join us in this project. We're calling it QUILTERS COMFORT AMERICA.

PART 1: Urgent Donations to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund. We will match EVERY donation made by quilters to the American Red Cross, up to a maximum of $10,000, on a dollar for dollar basis. In other words, if you make a $25 donation, we'll match that with another $25 donation. If you make a $100 donation, we'll match that with another $100 donation, right up to the maximum. To avoid delays in your donations reaching the Red Cross, and because we have trusted quilters for more than 30 years now, just email us with the amount of your donation that you sent to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund. Every penny of every donation--up to $10,000--will be matched by International Quilt Festival. You have my word on that. Please use this email address: exec5@quilts.com and use the subject line: RED CROSS DONATION.

PART 2: QUILTS FOR COMFORT Many thousands of the Katrina refugees are being sent to Houston RIGHT NOW, and no one knows how long they will have to be here. Most of them escaped the hurricane's fury with only the clothes on their backs--nothing more--and they may have absolutely nothing to go home to. They don't even know. The Astrodome is ready as temporary housing, but there is a serious shortage of bedding. Part 2 of QUILTERS COMFORT AMERICA is the collection of quilts of all kinds to be distributed to the refugees here in Houston so that they have something soft to sleep on instead of the hard concrete floors of the temporary shelters and something warm to cover up with against the chill of otherwise welcome air-conditioning (we've been in the 90s and 100s for weeks now).

Many of us have unfinished projects filling our closets and cupboards. Get out one of those projects--twin size preferred but no smaller than baby quilt size, please--and finish it up for this. Use lightweight batting--do whatever binding is the quickest, even a close zigzag stitch. You don't have to quilt it--tie it! If you have only small projects, add borders. Think about a mother lying on the floor cradling her baby--that's the size quilt we need to provide. These quilts are not meant to be heirlooms, although they will probably be treasured for many years as a symbol of the caring of strangers. Tie them, machine quilt them, work in a group with your friends and finish several on an assembly line, do whatever it takes to get these finished quickly. THE NEED FOR THESE QUILTS IS RIGHT NOW! If you already have some finished pieces that you don't have plans for, send them too, as long as they are no smaller than baby quilt size. If you are a professional, you may have sample quilts that have become shop-worn or faded but are still clean and very usable in an emergency--send them!--we are IN an emergency! Be sure to put a label on the back of your quilt or sign it with a kind thought and your name and date. Every piece will go to a refugee family driven from their homes by the hurricane.

To participate in QUILTERS COMFORT AMERICA, send an email to exec5@quilts.com (subject line: COMFORT AMERICA) to let us know how many quilts you are sending. That will help us help the Red Cross in its planning. Please do not expect a confirmation that your quilt has been received or any kind of nice thank-you. Sometimes we just have to do things because they are the RIGHT things to do--this is one of those times. People need help...the kind of help WE can give.

Use this address to send your quilt/s: COMFORT AMERICA PROJECT c/o International Festival 7660 Woodway, Suite 550 Houston, TX 77063 Please note: for security, do NOT use the word 'quilt' ANYWHERE in your address label!

Many of us have also amassed linen closets full of old but completely usable sheets--perhaps a size you no longer use, or juvenile prints that your college age kids don't like anymore. Clean sheets and blankets are also most welcome to QUILTERS COMFORT AMERICA. Naturally, everything should be clean and fresh. These folks have lived with enough mud and dirt to last them the rest of their lives--let's give them a clean bed to rest in. Please note that we cannot use fabric, patterns, scraps, etc.

Quilt Festival will serve as the collection point for these quilts, and we will deliver them DAILY to the American Red Cross staffing the refugee centers in Houston, where they will be distributed by the Red Cross volunteers. Because we are right here in Houston where more than 25,000 of the refugees will be, we can make a difference RIGHT NOW...if you'll help.

Time is critical--the need is NOW! People are arriving by the hour, children are bedding down on the cold concrete, bedding is needed by people of all ages who have lost everything in this horrible storm. Please help if you can. If you live in or around Houston, you are welcome to hand deliver your donations to us. Our address is 7660 Woodway, Suite 550, Houston 77063. You can find it on Mapquest. Please note that this is one block of Woodway that runs perpendicular to all the rest of Woodway.

Thanks to everyone!

QUILTERS COMFORT AMERICA.

Hi! I'm new to this tribe, but wanted to share some info about myself and my charity group. In 1994, I suffered a hed injury and became disabled. About four years ago, I discovered quilting and am now thoroughly addicted. To pass some of my time, I recently created a quilt charity called Blanketing America With Love. We provide quilts to families that have lost their homes to fire or other disasters. The first quilt is in the frame and halfway done. I love talking to other quilters. Anyone interested in starting a fabric swap, please let me know.

I'm workinng on some art quilts that require bold contrasting quilting.
